zac posen's pianist

Believe it or not, I played the piano for 11 years. And though I cannot remember anything past chopsticks, I still love the look of a grand piano.
Though I would love to own just one piano,
Zac Posen opted for four pianos and a runway show.
Purple Diary has posted some awesome, up close photos of the show. And if you search the site you can see some Rodarte, Phi, and Proenza Schouler photos too.

p.s. Two days left to enter the giveaway. You could win FREE shoes.

oh so sofia

I've never been a died hard fan of Louis Vuitton. Until...

Sofia was invited to design a line. Her accessories designs for LV are oh so desirable (like the bag above), and perhaps what gets me even more are the photos. See them all here.

london love

Trying to stay focused from one fashion week to the next is like trying to play golf blindfolded. Those of us that aren't cool enough to actually get invited spend our time like this: search photos, take note, save photos, search for better photos, see a familiar outfit but cannot remember who made it, search for designer, find designer, take more notes, drink some coffee, and start again. After following fashion weeks for a couple years now, my head still spins.

That being said, every season has the "must sees", those designers who blew us away last season we just can't wait to see more. Or perhaps they designed Michelle Obama's dress; therefore, we wait in anxious anticipation to see what these desired designers send down the runway.

Christopher Kane is one of those "must see". The London based, Central Saint Martins graduate made quite a statement back in 2006 with his spring 07 collection of mini neon dresses. Since then, he's been on the radar. With incredible technical skills and a style all his own, Christopher Kane didn't disappoint this season either. See the fall 09 collection.

Personally I loved the nude and black, the sheer combos, and the subtle sexy girl dresses. Now, if only I had one of those dresses in my closet...

oscar options

So you're a super awesome actress and you're headed to the Oscars. You've spent the last two weeks eating lettuce, drinking water, and doing 5 hours of bike rides everyday. And thanks to all your hard work you are finally a size 0 instead of a size 2 (oh the excitement). But there is still one more important thing you have to do . . . get dressed.

Do you go like SJP in Christian Dior and embrace the tulle?

Or how about a Roberto Cavalli or Versace dress with a train?

What about Melissa George and her Dolce & Gabbana poof?

I would suggest you keep it simple with Elie Saab or go all out with the vintage Balmain. The Balmain dress nearly killed me. Seriously, I drooled so much over it I nearly drowned.

I am not sure who made Beyonce's dress but I wouldn't recommend it. But who or what would you wear?

p.s. Don't forget to enter this month's giveaway. You could win free shoes!

life isn't always fair

Dear Mr. I'll drive my hummer through your loop holes,

You've been the Goven-a-tor of Calie-fornie-a since 2003. You ran on the promise to "invest in high-quality teachers" and "build more schools." Actually you specifically said, "We need to stop hiring people to work in the central office and start investing in the men and women who work with our children." I have but one question for you to answer:

Do you think you are investing in men and women who work with "our" children when you lay of school counselors like my mom?

For over 20 years my mom has worked for one school, sacrificing her time, her efforts, her energy, and most importantly her heart. She has spent countless hours working with 'high-risk' students - fifth grade girls who are being molested by their step-dad, third grade boys who have cigarettes put out on their tiny arms, first graders who are homeless and fall asleep at night behind the Safeway.

The one person who believes in the children, encourages them, listens to them, and fights for them hasn't been you, Mr. Goven-a-tor. You've been busy driving around in your hummer, giving lame speeches, making terminator jokes, and failing to complete the task you some how were elected to do.

You spoke today about how great it is you finally passed a budget. "The perfect medicine for our ailing economy," you say. You tout your accomplishment as if finding a half-ass solution to a $42 billion dollar short fall is something to be proud off. A budget that cuts education spending, that has led to 20,000 people being laid off, 20,000 hard working Americans like my mom who make more of a difference in this world then you ever will.

I could use a variety of harsh words to describe my feelings toward the situation, trust me the thoughts have passed through my mind. And yet none of them mean a thing to me. What matters most is not your fuck-ups, but more so the effects of your mistakes. It the fact that my mom called crying today because she's getting laid off. My mom who is more qualified, more talented, has worked harder, longer, and given more of herself, my mom who has spent 20 + years working in education, who is qualified with her Master's degree, who is 60 years old, who is raising her grandson (my nephew), and yet she won't find peace tonight. She is the one who will be lying awake, starring at the ceiling, trying to find a place to put all the fear she now carries.

And you Arnold, with your $42 billion dollar fuck-up, will sleep soundly in your expensive sheets, in your silk pajama, with fresh cut flowers by your bed.

Until Monday...

aging isn't all that bad

If you are in need of a reminder that aging isn't all that bad, then head over to Fashionologie. She notes the ages of some not-so-young models who walked the runway in New York this past week. And I must say, it makes me feel better to know that at 38 years old you don't have to hide your face because "mature" women are finally considered hot.

the mystery of margiela

Maison Martin Margiela celebrated his 20th anniversary with a two decade retrospective at the Antwerp Mode Museum. The 6 month exhibition ran from last September 2008 till this past Sunday, February 8, 2009.

Though the man himself is a mystery to most, he rarely shows his face or engages in interviews, and yet his designs are unmistakable and the utmost desirable for men and women alike.

I wasn't lucky enough to make it to Belgium to check it out, but I did find some fantastic photos of the exhibit at Antwerp Fashion Observer. Take a look, you'll leave inspired.

going trendless

Marc Jacobs

New York Fashion week is underway and though it may be early to call trends at this point, but let me just put it out there, the trend for fall 2009 is. . . "the no trend" trend. Yes, you read that correctly, there are no trends. If you pick up the February issue of ELLE UK, their is a fantastic article about this trendless idea. To sum it up, as the global economy continues to tank, trends are hard to create because people no longer have the disposable income to buy such short lived products. You can read Anna Wintour's thoughts on this subject in a interview posted yesterday in The Wall Street Journal.

The benefit to this no-trend trend is that you can spend the next year purchasing well-made, own it forever, lifetime wardrobe pieces.

Hopefully we will all have jobs so we can afford to go shopping. I say this as I watch CNN tell me that California is laying off 20,000 state workers tomorrow. Sit back and hold on tight, we've got a rough year ahead.

standing still

This is what I feel like today. As if everything else is moving around me (not in the best of ways) and I am just standing there. Of course I am not wearing such a fantastic dress.

I need a vacation. A long vacation. I think I am going to New York in May. Anyone want to join me?

grammy glamour

So, to be honest, I am not a fan of the Grammy's. I don't listen to much music that has come out past the Gang of Four days. And artist like Duffy and Lil Wayne can't be found in my record collection. But that doesn't mean I can't watch the red carpet pre-show, right?

That being said, I watched but I didn't find much that blew me away. Out of all the ladies, these two were the only ones that sparked my interest. You can see much more of the Grammy's best and worst dressed here. Take a look and let me know what you think. Who was your favorite? What was not? And what about Paris Hilton's outfit?

a moment

Right this second I am listening to New Order -Dreams Never End, and I came across this photo. It's fitting. It fits my day. It fits what I want my day to feel like. I want to sit on this nasty, cushion-less chair, listening to New Order, with oversized headphones on (the kind with the super padded ears). I'll close my eyes, enjoy the way the sun heats my face, crack a smile, and then get up and walk out the door.

making the great depression great

The stock market crash on 1929 may have killed the economy but it couldn't kill glamor. And though no one is calling the current U.S. economic status that serious just yet, perhaps we should prepare by reminding ourselves just how glamorous the great depression can be if we find creative ways to work it out.

new york fashion week finds a new home

According to The New York Times, New York Fashion Week has found a new home. Though they have spent 15 years at Bryant Park, starting in 2010 shows will take place at Lincoln Center. Reason for the move is said to be a variety of disagreements with the park management company. The shows have grown too big and are said to be restricting public access.

If I could have one job in the world it would be an Art or Fashion Director. I would love to art direct fashion advertisements. And though my dream job is a long way off, these spring 2009 campaigns keep me inspired.

I love Chloe ads. Perhaps it's more about the clothes rather than the ads.

Lanvin ads usually speak to my dreams. For the past couple of seasons the ads were like walking into a fantasy. But this spring, Lanvin ads make the fantasy seem easier to achieve with soft images of a model casually laying on a sofa or checking oneself out in the mirror.

And the Gucci ad. . . well Gucci sells sex, and what about sex is not to like?
