any ideas?

This may sound crazy based on my current circumstances, but I am headed to New York in 2 weeks. We purchased the tickets and paid for the hotel over 6 months ago. And at this point, it would cost more to cancel, than it will cost to go. So we're going.

My husband will be DJing while we are there. But I am still in need of some awesome, pocket-friendly places to hang out. Got any suggestions?

1$ dumplings on Mott St in China Town. An old chinese woman makes them by hand.

Check out the fabric district (35-42 sts from broadway to 8th Ave)- tons of sample sales always in play. I've gotten amazing dresses, cardigans, bags, leather jackets, lingerie...etc...dirt cheap.

Oh, I am so envious. New York is my dream destination. I hope you have the time of your life, whatever you decide to do. I cannot suggest anything as I've never been there.

You should checkout the Avedon retrospective at the International Center of Photographer (Avenue of the Americas at 43rd Street) and Models as Muses at the Met (5th Ave at 86th Street. Both are definately worth seeing.

Yea, this may be just what you need to lift your spirits. It looks like you're getting some good suggestions already. I don't know a thing about NYC. The last time I was there, years ago with Cute Hubby, some guy approached us and asked us if we'd like to make a movie. Yuk.

I have a million places I've been dying to try in NYC but I doubt any are budget friendly :) Spotted Pig tops the list these days :)

Yes!! I do... Last summer we did a staycation in NYC and had a great time. You can check it out here: http://www.thelilbee.com/2008/08/wish-you-were-here.html (on the list: Peanut Butter & Co--delish!, and a visit to Governor's Island).

For restaurants I recommend Freeman's, Macao Trading Co, Burger Joint (this and PB&Co are both amazing for different reasons, and extremely budget friendly), and Cafe Cluny.

For drinks: The Brooklyn Beer Gardens (a quick subway ride away and super fun), Le Royale, the Rusty Knot (LOVE this place...love it), and Esperanto.

Take time to just walk around the West Village which, in my opinion, is the prettiest neighborhood. And, if you have time, go to the Botanical Gardens. There are two--Brooklyn and the Bronx. Bring a camera and pack a lunch. Have so much fun:)

PS: feel free to email me for any more suggestions!

I love that pic of Gisele, she's amazing!! I am planning on heading there to for the first time around July. I have already planned out everything by doing some research online!! :D Sometimes when you plan out your vacation online, they give you some suggestions. If you have time, you should buy a CityPass and it's basically admission to many of the museums and landmarks around NYC.

there was an article in my AAA magazine this month about NY on the cheap...I will try to see if I still have it.

go to the moma. all the museums are basically pay what you can so they can cost you a dollar. instead of waiting in line to see the statue of liberty, take the staten island ferry, i think $5 last time i was there, and get views of the statue and the whole city. walk around soho and the villiage for good eats and cheap shopping, and don't forget central park. they have plenty of summer concerts, and all you have to do is sit in the green closest to the bandstand and listen for free.

My husband and I recently moved back to Seattle after 10 years in NYC…I’m jealous – New York in the summer is fantastic! If you’re into contemporary art it doesn’t cost a thing to spend an afternoon wandering around the galleries in Chelsea. When you’re tired stop for a drink or a snack at The Half King (or if that’s too crowded try The Park). Jones diner on Great Jones Street was one of our favorites for brunch on weekends (cheap & good & if you sit at the bar you’ll get super fast, friendly service). Or grab a breakfast croissant from Balthazar and wander around Nolita (be sure to stop by Resurrection while you’re there!). MoMA is free every Friday from 4-8, and if you’re in the city after the Bryant Park film festival starts you can catch free outdoor movies on Monday eves – get there early with a picnic to secure your spot. Spend some time browsing in the Strand bookstore. Take a free ferry ride from the tip of Manhattan to Staten Island and back – great views of the city. It’s not cheap, but if you want to get dressed up one of my favorite places for outdoor drinks in the evening is the bar at the Maritime Hotel. Brooklyn also has a million great spots. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge on Sat. or Sun., go to the Brooklyn Flea, and then check out DUMBO. Habana Outpost in Fort Greene is a fun place for afternoon drinks and food (though it can get pretty crowded on the weekends). Williamsburg is its own universe. Take the F train out to Coney Island – walk on the boardwalk, have a knish or some clam strips and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. David Byrne is playing a free concert on June 8 in Prospect Park. So much…pick up a New York mag while you’re there and you’ll be set. Have fun – you deserve it!

Upright Citizens Brigade is always really cheap...like $8 I think was what I paid to see it a couple of years ago...if you want to go thrifting, I highly suggest Arthritis, it is 1430 Third Ave., New York, NY 10028. There are several Good Will sort of places also in the area, and a good Jewish thrift store and a really awesome store for HIV/AIDS research (unfortunately a bit more of an expensive shop than the others)...but unfortunately the names of these places are slipping my mind.

And, if you're completely broke, take the Staten Island Ferry! It's free and fun to look out the window...The MoMA is free for students...and Central Park is always awesome! If you've never been to the Belvedere Castle, you really ought to go. ;) I'm almost positive it's free.

I'm also a huge nerd for the Circle Line tours...they're boat tours around the island of Manhattan...you see areas of Manhattan that you really didn't know existed, and they give a good history. =) Kinda pricey, but relaxing and a good way to spend the day...

As far as food, I can't think of any good and cheap places, but there is a GREAT, inexpensive Cuban place near Balthazar...I forget the name. =/ I think it's on maybe Crosby or Broome...

I am also a huge fan of the Choux Factory which is 1685 First Ave., New York, NY 10128. I also love Agata & Valentina for breakfast...also a bit more pricey, but so incredibly worth it...you can spend most of the morning eating breakfast and watching people. Very fun. =) It is 1505 1st Ave on the Upper East Side.

Sorry I can't be of more help...I'm not from NYC, but yes, I hope you have a good time! =D
