buzz-buzz-buzz

It's been a crazy year and it's not even April yet. One of my many new year's resolutions was to get more involved in fashion. Yea, I know, that is kind of a broad statement. What exactly does "get more involved" mean? And what exactly does "fashion" mean? Should I study up, read more relevant books and articles? Or attend more events, start local and grow from there? Or pick up, move to New York, live in a box, and sell my soul to work as an unpaid intern for a magazine? The thought did cross my mind.

In the overall sense the goal stemmed from the fact that fashion is something that I've come to love over the past years. Like any girl, I love a Lanvin dress, but it's become more that that. Fashion, more so designers, have sparked a drive for more knowledge and understanding. Aside from who made what, why did they make it, where did their inspiration come from, who inspired the person that inspired the designer, how are the social, political, economic, personal factors impacting designers that design the clothes we wear. Open my brain and it is like a sociology class is relation to fashion. I could go on...

That being said, I've been busy like a bee. I've got two weeks left at my current job and then I am making a career switch. I can feel the fear rising up in my stomach when I type "career switch". But I am. I'm leaving my safe and secure marketing job to go work as a Web and Inventory Manager at Totokaelo. Deep breath. No, I don't believe this will be my career for the next 20 years, but in the long run, I believe the experience will serve as a jumping off point for what ever my future becomes.

Deep breath. There is a lot going on, a lot more things to share. And for now I might just pee my pants in anxiety and excitement.

Leaving a job and moving onto the next chapter is always a test of our inner struggle. It's kinda like taking a dive in murky waters....not relly sure what's down there. Having a sense of adventure and willing to put yourself out there is what makes life exciting. You have the skills and enough faith in your ablilities that you surely will succeed. Can't wait to see where it takes you! :)

Good luck....it is very rare that someone actually gets to love what they do. Do whatever you can to get there!

Wow - I totally agree and relate to everything you just said. I love fashion but it doesn't rule my life (though spending habits say otherwise). Yet trying to become more involved is also a goal of mine, though who knows if that means a career change (I'm in marketing too and it would be swell to do it for a business that I care about...ie NOT ENGINEERING!). So yeah, keep your eyes open and and eventually you'll find your way...least that's what I am telling myself!

Good luck, bravery is always rewarded!

Good luck. I think that's a great switch, and with the number of fashion mags now purely online, that can't be a bad move at all. Like you, it's the sociology of the industry that turns my mind inside out - I can take you right back to dinking about in textiles and as far back as the farm gate. It's too big, TOO BIG!

Are you serious! That's freakin' awesome! Love them - love their aesthetic, ethos and store. Good for you girl - we must go out and celebrate ASAP. I sense more damage to my credit card coming on...

"Or pick up, move to New York, live in a box, and sell my soul to work as an unpaid intern for a magazine?" My summer plans exactly.

Career switches, NBD. I earned my undergrad degree in Cell & Molec Biology from a top 50 school, and am completing my MA in philosophy now.
BUT FASHION RULES IT ALL!!!!

Be brave, even in these times of *gasp* recession!

I'm sorry I haven't had time to catch up on your blog until now. I just wanted to say a HUGE congratulations! I absolutely understand the anxiety and exhilaration! I'm working towards joining the textile and product design world after may years working as a graphic designer. We must live our dreams!
